Though he is one of the best-known names in the U.S. music industry, mega-hit producer and composer David Foster continues to champion Canadian artists and attributes his success to his West Coast upbringing.

“The way I was raised in Victoria has been a secret weapon my whole life. When you cut somebody open and you just go to their core, what you’ll see with me is my upbringing in Victoria,” Foster told CBC News Friday morning.

“Canada’s my passion, my foundation.”

Foster, who was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame at a Toronto ceremony Thursday evening, remains an enthusiastic booster of Canadian talent: from veterans like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell to newer acts like Shania Twain and Michael Bublé.

“The list is just endless of the immense talent that comes from this country. Every time a new Canadian makes it, I just feel a little sense of pride.”

Foster, 57, has worked with a who’s who of top names in the music industry, including Barbra Streisand, George Harrison, Madonna, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, John Lennon, Diana Ross, Chicago, The Corrs and Lionel Ritchie.

An officer of the Order of Canada and a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, he has also won 14 Grammy Awards, seven Junos and one Emmy.

However, Foster is not content to rest on his laurels. In addition to promoting and working with new artists, he is composing themes for the 2008 and 2010 Olympics. He also cited Sting and Stevie Wonder as artists on his wish list of people he’d like to work with in the future.

“The older you get, the more difficult it is to have success in the music business. It’s a youth-driven business,” Foster said.

“I think if you combine talent with energy, that’s when you have a formula for success. I think I have both. And I have no desire to slow down.”
