After her landmark guest appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ self-titled US TV show late last year, Charice will soon be seen on yet another popular US TV show, Oprah no less. Charice doesn’t know exactly when the Oprah episode will be aired, although Oprah herself has been plugging it, reminding televiewers “to watch for 10 fantastic kids,” one of whom happens to be Charice. The TV teaser said: They may look like ordinary kids but what they are getting ready to do on our stage will blow you away! This you have to see to believe! Coming this May.
So how did Charice get into Oprah?
“Through Mr. David Foster,” Charice told Funfare. Charice met Foster last year. He saw Charice on Ellen and he took pains to contact her. And then Foster asked Charice to sing. Presto! Before Charice knew it, Foster was asking her to record Ordinary World, one of his compositions (Foster has written songs for almost all the big names in the industry, from Celine Dion to Barbra Streisand to Whitney Houston to Josh Groban).
“My newest baby” is how Foster introduces Charice to people.
So fond Foster has become of Charice that he even brought her on his private jet to Las Vegas to watch the farewell concert of Celine Dion. They were seated on the front-center, no less.
It was Foster who brought Charice to the attention of Oprah. “Watch out for her,” Foster told Oprah.
During the shoot in Chicago, which lasted for two hours (5 to 7 p.m.) early this month, recalled Charice, she saw Oprah watching from the sidelines. The 10 “fantastic kids” were each asked to perform their forte. One played the guitar, one played the drum, another did a dance exhibition. It was only Charice who sang a song, I Have Nothing (also by Whitney Houston), like I Will Always Love You, one of the two songs Charice sang on Ellen
“She hugged me before the interview portion,” Charice said. “Nagulat ako! Natulala ako! Siempre, si Oprah siya, eh!”
A third placer in the ABS-CBN talent search Little Big Star in 2006, Charice was discovered by Ellen via the YouTube in which a fan who called herself “False Voice” uploaded a film clip of Charice’s performance in the South Korean show Star King. An Ellen staffer saw the YouTube and told DeGeneres about it, prompting her to make a joke on air about giving a reward to anybody who could furnish her the contact number of Charice. Ed Shapiro, Ellen’s lawyer, found Charice’s website. Shapiro got in touch with Michael Gurfinkel who rushed the processing of Charice and her mom’s US visa. Mother and daughter arrived in the US in the nick of time.
On Ellen, Charice sang two songs, I Will Always Love You and And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going (sung by American Idol graduate Jennifer Hudson in the movie version of Dreamgirls).
Between Ellen and Oprah, Charice was booked for a guest appearance early this year on The Paul O’Grady Show in London where she sang the same two songs (as requested by O’Grady himself).
After Oprah, Charice will finish recording her debut album (for Star Records). You guessed it: The album is titled simply Charice.

In the UK I don’t believe we have had the chance to see Charice, but no matter. Now that David Foster has got his hands on her career, she may as well shoot herself - if what he has done for Renee Olstead is anything to go by Charice will never be heard of again.

She truly deserve to be recognize now. I saw her struggle before when she joined little big star and that singing contest in ABS-CBN’s noontime show where she just came 2nd placer when it was pretty obvious that she nailed the show. I don’t know how they judged it but as far as i can remember me and my friends turn off the TV right after they announced that she was just a 2nd placer.

I got hooked on this kid’s voice via youtube and I really do hope she gets to do an album with David Foster. Somebody needs to write her, her own song so she can truly be a star and stop being a side note or an “introducing” new talent on somebody else’s show.

I love her so much. There isn’t a day that I don’t watch her in Youtube. I agree, she should have her own songs. But I don’t want her to get a vocal coach. I like her voice and style of singing as it is- unique, raw and one of a kind; and it should not be corrupted.

I used to love Whitney’s voice, during the Bodyguard Album years, but sadly, I believe she will never again be able to sing as she used to — drugs can do that! Can someone explain to how in the world she came out a 3rd placer at the ABS-CBN singing competition? I watched that contest and was 101% sure she will be the winner but came 3rd place. I was total shocked! We need a closure on this because, I and millions of her fans, thinks that the result was not justified.
Come on “Ms Lolit”, the TV Channel is not looking for the Talent, they wanted only to choose the way they appear in TV but not their Talent, it is just secondary. That is why USA / UK / Korea are great, 1st will be their Talent and a plus if they have looks but not necessarily. That is the answer “Ms Lolit”, satisfied? Its a TV Business in poor Philippines. If you are pretty or handsome you become instant Actor/Actress or even Singer in some cases.

TV Show CApitalists here in the Philo believe that having better looks for their Talent artists are much preferred by most of the people than on an individual who really have a genuine talent Like CHARICE. AS what did Kokeek said, Its a TV BUsiness in Poor Philippines. Its true. FIlipino Capitalists prefer EASY MONEY! Thats how they describe theyr games here.
I believe CHARICE should now take the opportunity to show her talent abroad for her entire living and this is the best way for her to fulfill her dreams inlife. She can sing everything. She sings with power and passion. Simply the best teen singer I’ve seen so far. Her voice and facial expression hit you straight in the heart. You become emotionaly involved during her performance. If she was doing a sad ballad, you may not hold up your tears; but if it was one of those party or disco songs, you wanted to dance. Magnificent little girl.
Charice have united people from different nationalities, religion, cultural background, social status, educational attaintment and political affilication.
Charice have brought men, women and children into tears.
Her voice captivated millions all over the world.
Maybe its time for us to listen to her and realize, that we are not different from each other after all.

Actually, Filipino Singing Talents started way back 1960’s ( “Tawag Ng Tanghalan” ) with the emergence of Radios & TVs as influenced by the Western Music, every filipinos wants to sing. Then came the Karaoke’s, and with the search singing talent shows that appear in almost every local TV channels, everybody wants to be a star. I myself was measured a Tenor. I have heard in my friends friend about 2 Arnel Pineda’s to be and about 3 Charices. If you ratio 80 million Filipinos whom about 50% singing then you get an enormous amount of singing population. Only due to poverty factors that great talents were left unattended. Now with this YouTube factor, I think thats a possibility, just as what had happened to Arnel Pineda & Charice herself. I think almost all high pitched songs she can deliver. One of the best that you need to hear is Charice rendition of “Alone” uploaded by Bagongmundo in Youtube ( Karaoke). Father to get reconciled with is what charice first and foremost need that she totally need to be prayed and blessed for. Her GIFT from god is not important without her original family being reconciled and reunited and with god’s help, and blessing on this special family that she needed more than ever. If we really care for our young so called world Idol, young sister(foster) as for some of us claims, we would do justice to consider her one of her foremost need to have her family back, just because we all need to in god’s eye. Her life story is a heartbreaking, god’s love got revealed because of her powerful gift. with that I felt honored, because of what gods doing to us all, reuniting us as a family, using us all to be one in spirit, joy, pain, sorrow, hope and love. I contracted this new virus called “Charicitis”. Its the only virus that can cure a lot of ailments like stress, boredom, loneliness, and lifelessness. Its also a virus to honor more your parents and love them and also to set dreams in your empty life. but before you can be affected, you need to see her performance from Ellen, Oprah, PaulObrady, and her LasVegas1-2. I think its Ellen initially who contracted this deadly virus, first and foremost, but now it spreads down to my electronic gadgets from where i need to download all Youtube appearances to PC and then upload it to my Sony PSP. and this disease continues to this very day, needs to inject it before i sleep every night. It is rare to see such combination of pure pure raw talent, pure pure golden voice, and pure pure innocence (life and personality) in one generation, or even one dynasty. Do not corrupt this combination. Let it be. Coach her properly in terms of communication ( best way would be hire someone who can sit down with her morning, lunch afternoon and practise her, even small talks will make big difference - worth worth the effort, do not just let her attend communication classes). So remember, I said coach her in terms of communication… and not in terms of english… She knows english… It is when to use, where to use, and what to use…
It will be a terrible terrible terrible thing to not expose her talent to every place on earth. The world has the right to witness this gift.

Usually when you hear young people sing Celine Dion or any other famous singer their performance will have peaks and weak spots, or they tend to exaggerate certain parts to emphasize their range…Charise is remarkably different! She sings like she owns those songs - flawlessly!

I’ve only learned about Charice over this last TG weekend (11.2008) from my niece & her mom. They were raving about her. I checked the YT and I am now a smitten fan. I’ve made a special section of her on MySpace ;). Her vocal talent is “bar none” the top, the best in a long time. That is indisputable. But what is amazing is she exudes an intoxicating charm that tags your heart. Her beauty - “amazing soul & heart” as Celine Dion describes it - shine through. One cannot “not” love her. And since her speedy rise to stardom (that only many aspiring artists could ever imagine), she has remained grounded & true to herself. Her demure smile, the innocence - are just breath-taking. She is a perfect picture of authenticity - truly genuine & real! The magnitude of her rise to stardom, the high caliber of people that have been brought to her path do not seem to change her God-loving spirit and essence. Truly God blessed!

I’m a David fan. I have this “The Best Of Me” Album. When I chanced upon a cd being played in a record bar (Charice was singing), I quickly asked the saleslady for it. Unfortunately, the cd was out of stock. I combed the city for this David Foster & Friends album, and I got it. The Best Of Me album is now my number two. Foster is a genius! He knows Charice is a rare find. BTW, Katharine Mcphee is so beautiful. Also, why is it that I don’t hear Just For A Moment anymore? It is a beautiful song. It was a favorite of mine when I was a kid.

Mr Foster could you please write songs for Charice that only she could sing. She has such an incredible voice, range, style, etc… She can sing anything she wants to I saw her rendition of ‘Alone’ at a concert in san Diego - AWESOME. She nails whatever she sings all the time (many times even better than the originals), not like some big shot singers. Whenever she sings you can feel she does it from her heart. Her voice is so strong she sounds like a modern Edith Piaf, actually similar story, similar physique, similar conviction in her voice. I’ve been glued to my computer for the past three days looking at her ‘YouTube’ videos. She really need to have her own songs. Most of all I’m positively sure that whenever she’ll have a concert at Madison Square Garden she’ll be sold out in a record time, even in a bad economy. People need Love, Hope, Joy and that’s what she’s all about, a down to earth dream come true. I watched some parts of your show in Las Vegas, you could see some of your musicians really enjoying playing while she’s performing, simply Amazing for sure. Please, please, please, keep Charice -You and Oprah- under your wings, she really needs a lot of positive support & father figure in her life. Also, her mom seems to be such a wonderful mother, she dedicated her life despite hardships, to her children. What an example to follow for countless families in the world.

I do not realise the magnitude of Charices’ popularity until I saw her on PBS with you Mr. Foster “david foster & friends”. I wish that you coud write and produce an original song/s for her. If she can be so good in that concert with a lot of noise interference and no second or third takes, how much more in the recording studio that you can have the perfect sound and quality.

I first heard about her when you were guesting on a PBS fund drive here in the northwest (I’m in your home town Victoria by the way…). By now, I would think most of us have heard Charice’s amazing performances. Her latest triumph was in Italy on 4 April 2009. Do yourselves a favour everyone… check it out!! She was a guest on this BIG production and they devoted a lot of time to her. They were not disappointed! The Italian bloggers are going nuts… she has now taken Italy by storm! Answering to Lolit’s question why Charice finished 3rd in the ABS-CBN song contest, simply put, she’s not pretty enough to shine for ABS-CBN. But Charice’s sad fate in that contest did work out to her advantage. If Charice was chosen to stay in ABS-CBN, per popularity may have dwindled by now ‘coz they are so sleazy in building up genuine talents. Look where Sam Concepcion (Grand Prize Winner who defeated Charice) is now. Sarah Geronimo and Rachel Ann Go were not winners of ABS-CBN talent contest, but were originally from GMA Network, if you should know. ABS-CBN are best for being repulsive, that’s for sure!!!
As for Kuya Fred, I know how proud you are for Charice and how concerned you are for her future. But I think also that you need to know more first about who Mr. David Foster, The David Foster, really is before giving such unsolicited advices. Despite having watched every YouTube video I could find, I was still astounded by the power of Charice’s voice and her remarkable stage presence. And, the following day, she was exactly as I had imagined: sweet, humble, and genuinely appreciative of her fans.

I’ve been watching various videos of her on YouTube for over a year now. I believe the first video I saw of her was the one where she was on StarKing for the first time and ever since then, I’ve been hooked. I’ve probably watched thousands of hours worth of videos by now. Heck, these past few days I’ve been spending 6+ hours watching her on YouTube lol. If you watch her various interviews like the SNN one with Boy, you’ll see more about her life and what she’s had to overcome. Truly heartbreaking but so fortunate that she has a wonderful mother to hold her up when all those around her try to bring her down. She’s truly an amazing singer and person.
